If you’ve never seen the Michigan fall colors up close, this is the year to plan for it. Our hardwood forests spend a few short weeks turning from deep green to every shade of gold, orange, and red, and the Great Lakes Bay Region, which includes Bay City, Frankenmuth, Midland, and Saginaw, is consistently ranked among the best places in the state to watch it happen. Peak color usually lands in early to mid-October here, a little later than the color show up north, which means you can chase the leaves in the Upper Peninsula in late September and still catch a second wave close to home a few weeks later.
You don’t need a long road trip to get a real autumn experience. Everything on this list is within about half an hour of downtown Bay City, so you can spend your day outside and still make it back to sit by the fireplace in your guest room at our Historic Bed and Breakfast in Bay City. The Best Places to See Michigan Fall Colors Near Bay City
Everyone enjoys the fall colors in Michigan a little differently, so this list is organized by how you want to spend your day rather than just where to go. Prefer to sit back and watch the color drift by? Start with the boats. Want to actually walk through it? Head for the trails.
Michigan Fall Colors by Sail or Boat
- Ride the Princess Wenonah along the Saginaw River and take in the color from the water. Bay City Boat Lines runs themed cruises through the season, including live-music nights that make for an easy date.
- In Frankenmuth, the Bavarian Belle Riverboat cruises the Cass River past tree-lined banks turning color.
- Frankenmuth FunShips also runs a wine-and-chocolate tasting cruise with the backdrop of fall foliage
- BaySail’s Appledore Tall Ships offer a daytime history sail or a sunset cruise. BaySail is a nonprofit, so your ticket also supports Great Lakes environmental education.
Michigan Fall Colors on Foot or by Bike
- The largest coastal wetland on the Great Lakes sits right on Saginaw Bay. The Frank N. Andersen Nature Trail in the Tobico Marsh is a flat, paved, 1.25-mile path, an easy walk even if hiking isn’t usually your thing, with wetland and marsh views that turn gold by mid-October.
- Chippewa Nature Center offers nineteen miles of trails that wind through the woods and wetlands here, with some of the best fall views from the River Overlook. Their Fall Harvest Festival adds cider pressing and live folk music to the mix.
- Great Lakes Bay Regional Trail is a wide, paved trail connecting Bay City, Midland, and Saginaw, good for a leisurely bike ride through some of the most color-heavy stretches in the region.

Gardens and wildlife
- Dow Gardens is an 110-acre botanic garden in Midland and is worth a visit any season, but fall is when the Canopy Walk really shows off. It’s the longest in the nation, a series of bridges suspended 40 feet up through the Whiting Forest, and it puts you right at eye level with the changing treetops.
- Dahlia Hill Society, also in Midland, cares for over 340 dahlia varieties that bloom right through mid-October, so you get bright color at ground level to go with the trees overhead.
- Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is about an hour from Bay City in Saginaw; it’s one of the largest wetland ecosystems in the state. Walk the Woodland and Ferguson Bayou trails, or take the wildlife drive if you’d rather watch migrating birds from the car.
For the couple who wants a little adrenaline, try the ropes courses and a treetop zipline through the forest canopy at the Frankenmuth Aerial Park. It’s a fun way to see the color from above if the Dow Gardens Canopy Walk left you wanting more height.
For a sweet stop on the way back, pick your own apples and grab fresh cider donuts at Leaman’s Green Applebarn. The seventh-generation orchard in Freeland is an easy stop between Shiawassee and Bay City. And if you’re there on the right weekend, there’s even goat yoga.
