A beautiful and rugged cove at Conkle's Hollow State Natural area in Hocking Hills Ohio

Conkle’s Hollow State Natural Preserve in Hocking Hills, Ohio

Conkle’s Hollow State Nature Preserve is part of the larger Hocking Hills region and is managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The preserve covers more than 80 acres and protects a deep gorge carved through Black Hand sandstone over thousands of years. Massive cliffs surround the narrow valley, with some rising more than 200 feet overhead. This striking natural corridor, where temperatures stay noticeably cooler during the warmer months, is especially popular during spring, summer, and fall.

The most accessible hike in the preserve is the Conkle’s Hollow Gorge Trail, a relatively easy path that follows the creek through the base of the hollow. This trail is just over a mile round trip, the paved and gravel paths lead guests past enormous rock formations, lush ferns, wildflowers, and seasonal cascades, which become especially beautiful after rainfall. Along the route, interpretive signs explain the preserve’s ecology and geology.

The Gorge Trail ends at a stunning natural amphitheater, also known as “The Grotto,” surrounded by towering cliff walls. After heavy rain, small waterfalls can be seen streaming down the sandstone. Slump Rock is also a major landmark, where a massive, angled rock protrudes from the forest floor. It’s often covered in mosses and lichens, and it’s hard to miss along the Gorge Trail.

During autumn, the changing leaves create a colorful canopy overhead, making this one of the most scenic places for photography in Hocking Hills. From above, the rugged sandstone rocks are framed by bold oranges, golden hues, and pops of green. If you’re on the hunt for brilliant fall colors in Ohio, this is the place to catch this beautiful seasonal show.

For visitors looking for more challenging Hocking Hills hiking, the Conkle’s Hollow Trail system also includes the East & West Rim Trails. This trail climbs steeply from the gorge floor and follows the edge of the cliffs high above the preserve. The elevation gain is demanding, but the incredible views are absolutely worth the effort. This is a rugged and strenuous trail that should be reserved for seasoned hikers with proper gear.
