Columbia Gorge wineries pull off something a lot of wine regions cannot quite manage, dramatic scenery and truly good wine in the same glass. Carved by ancient floods and shaped by volcanic soil, this stretch of the Columbia River Gorge spans both Washington and Oregon, giving winemakers a range of microclimates to work with, from cool river breezes to sun soaked hillsides. The result is a wine region that produces everything from crisp whites to full bodied reds, all within a short drive of Hood River. Whether you are a seasoned wine drinker or just looking for a good excuse to explore, the Columbia Gorge wineries scene has a tasting room with your name on it.
Of course, wine is only part of the reason people fall for this region. Between waterfall hikes, orchard stops on the Hood River Fruit Loop, and windsurfing on the river itself, there is no shortage of things to do in the Columbia River Gorge no matter what season you visit in. Spend your morning on a trail with a view of Mount Hood, grab lunch in downtown Hood River, and you will still have plenty of daylight left for a few tastings before dinner.
After a full day of tasting and exploring, you will want a place to land that’s just as special. Carson Ridge Luxury Cabins gives you exactly that, a private cabins near Hood River with a fireplace, a jetted tub, and a gourmet breakfast waiting for you the next morning. Book your stay today!

Columbia Gorge Wineries Worth Planning a Trip Around
We have spent plenty of time visiting Columbia Gorge wineries ourselves, and here are some of our favorites, ranging from casual patio pours to reservation-only experiences worth building a whole day around.
Evoke Winery in downtown Hood River is a great pick if you want great wine without a stuffy tasting room feel. The labels are cheeky, but the pours evoke happiness. Both their red and white wines are grown right here in Oregon and Washington. Bring your dog along, since their all-weather patio is dog-friendly and comes with heaters and a fire pit table for cooler days. It is less than half an hour from Carson Ridge, so it makes an easy first or last stop on a Columbia Gorge wineries tasting day.
The Gorge White House has been a working farm for over a century and is only open seasonally, roughly April through October. Grab a glass of wine or hard cider, then wander their grounds, which include more than 50 varieties of dahlias along with u-pick fruit and flowers depending on the season. It’s a low-key, more hands-on visit.
COR Cellars sits just up the road in Lyle, Washington, and produces both red and white wines. Their tasting room is open Wednesday through Monday, with courtyard, indoor, and hillside tent seating depending on the vibe you are after. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the courtyard on leashes, though they ask that pups stay out of the tasting tents. If you want a private tour or a different day, just give them a call ahead of time.
Domaine Pouillon Winery is the product of expert care. Juliet and Alexis Pouillon craft small batches of wine from their own harvested grapes, and their tasting room manages to feel both luxurious and comfortable at once. Ask for a seat on the patio if the weather cooperates, since the hillside views over the vineyard are perfect for savoring as you sip.
Maryhill Winery offers one of the most striking settings of any Columbia Gorge winery, with sweeping views of the Columbia River and Mount Hood. Next door, you will find Maryhill State Park, the Maryhill Museum of Art, and a full-size replica of Stonehenge, so it is easy to turn one stop into an afternoon. Their summer concert series is also a favorite among locals, so check the schedule before you plan your visit.
Syncline Winery is one of the more scenic stops on this list. Take a tasting tour to see how the wine comes together, then settle in at their picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, or hammocks with a glass in hand and a view of the vineyard and gardens in front of you. There is a members-only picnic spot tucked away on the property that regulars love.
Jacob Williams Winery is a bit further out in Wishram, Washington. Their tasting room has a wraparound patio with sweeping views of the Columbia River and Mount Hood. Named after owner Brad Gearhart’s two sons, both their Washington and Oregon locations welcome families and dogs, and the wine list runs from Chardonnay and Pinot Gris to Cabernet Sauvignon and their own vintner’s blend named after the family dog.
Hiyu Wine Farm is a biodynamic farm just outside Hood River, pairing tasting flights with multi-course meals built around whatever was harvested that week, and every visit is by reservation only. It is not a spontaneous stop, but if you plan ahead, it might be the most memorable one on your trip.
If Hood River wine tasting is the main focus of your visit, it is also worth carving out time for Marchesi Vineyards, one of the most polished tasting rooms in town and a natural pairing with a day among the Columbia Gorge wineries above.
Wine tasting is such a personal journey, and while these eight Columbia Gorge wineries are excellent starting points, there are plenty more worth discovering. We are always happy to point our guests toward a few extra favorites during their stay.
