Fall is a really wonderful time of year to visit us in the San Juan Islands. The summer crowds thin out, the light turns gold in the afternoons, and the whole island slows down just a touch. If you’re wondering whether it’s worth planning a trip once September rolls around, the short answer is yes. Here’s what to do once you get here.
Is fall a good time to visit Friday Harbor?
Yes. The ferries run lighter, restaurant reservations get easier to come by, and the water is calm, which makes for better wildlife viewing. Daytime temperatures typically sit in the mid 50s to low 60s, so pack layers, but you’ll trade the July and August rush for a quieter, more personal island experience.
Go whale watching in the San Juans
Whale watching is always at the top of our list of things to do in Friday Harbor, and fall might be the best time to do it. The water is quieter after summer, some of the boat traffic drops off, and the Southern Resident orcas and transient pods are both still active in the area. A few local operators run smaller boats this time of year, so you’ll often get closer encounters than you would in peak season.
Hike out to Afterglow Vista
If you want one hike that captures what fall on this island looks like, head to Afterglow Vista. The trail is short, and the light through the trees in October is hard to beat. There are so many fantastic hikes to take on San Juan Island, and with a crispness in the air, it’s really a refreshing time of year. Spend a morning birding
Fall migration brings a real mix of species through San Juan Island, and birders come from well outside the region specifically for this window. Grab binoculars and set aside a morning; you don’t need to be an expert to enjoy it. Some of the best birdwatching on San Juan Island happens at Lime Kiln State Park and the San Juan Island National Historic Park.
Taste the harvest
Farm-to-table dinners, cider tastings, and farm tours are a real part of fall out here. It’s a different town in October than it is in July, in a good way.

The island has a handful of small wineries and cideries worth an afternoon, several within walking distance of downtown. Catch the Friday Harbor Film Festival
If your trip lines up with it, the Friday Harbor Film Festival is a genuinely fun reason to be in town in fall. It’s a documentary-focused festival held across a handful of small venues downtown, all walkable from the ferry and from our front door.

Local seafood is at its best in the fall; oysters, salmon, and Dungeness crab all show up on menus around town.
