Domaine Pouillon Winery has quietly become one of the most distinct stops in the Columbia River Gorge wine scene, and for good reason. This is a husband and wife operation that has spent two decades chasing old world winemaking in a decidedly new world setting, planting an organic vineyard on a former alfalfa field along the Columbia River. Now it draws wine lovers from Portland, Seattle, and everywhere in between. If you’re looking for a winery that skips the polish and leans into the craft, Domaine Pouillon earns its reputation honestly, glass by glass.
Of course, a great winery is just one piece of a Columbia River Gorge getaway. There are so many things to do in the Columbia River Gorge that a single trip barely scratches the surface, from hiking to waterfalls that seem to appear out of nowhere, to windsurfing and kiteboarding on the river itself, to wandering through small towns. Wine tasting fits right into that rhythm. Spend your morning on a trail, your afternoon at a tasting room, and your evening watching the sun drop behind the hills.
None of that works without the right home base, and that’s where Carson Ridge Luxury Cabins comes in. Our private cabins rentals near Hood River sit on acreage in Carson, Washington, close enough to the wineries and trailheads to make day trips easy. Book your stay today!

Visit Domaine Pouillon Winery
In 2005, when Juliet and Alexis Pouillon met and discovered they shared the same stubborn interest in making wine the old-world way. By 2007, they had planted vines on a stretch of land near the Columbia River that had been sitting abandoned, overgrown with pine and weeds, and stripped of nutrients. Rather than push it back into shape with conventional shortcuts, they rebuilt the soil slowly, using organic compost, cover crops, and rotational grazing. That patience paid off. Domaine Pouillon Winery’s estate vineyard is now certified organic by Oregon Tilth, a meaningful distinction in an industry where “sustainable” is often used loosely.
Alexis, who prefers the title Vigneron over winemaker, spent time working at Château Beaucastel in France before bringing his knowledge to Washington. His focus stays on the vines themselves throughout the growing season. Juliet runs the business side and the guest experience, and the two of them are joined by Teddi Fuller, who’s been with Domaine Pouillon as assistant winemaker since 2018 and has pushed the lineup into more adventurous territory with a Pét-Nat and a Ramato-style wine, and Sara Dyberg, who manages the wine club.
Here’s something worth knowing before you plan a visit: the original estate off Lyle Snowden Road, the one with the tasting room and hillside views, is now closed to the public. The place to experience Domaine Pouillon today is their Bistro in downtown Lyle, right along Highway 14, open Thursday through Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. It’s worth mentioning, as many people still search for the old tasting room at the vineyard.
The Domaine Pouillon Bistro pairs a full seasonal food menu with their wines, all overlooking the Columbia River, and it’s become a gathering spot for the town, with pop-up events ranging from oyster afternoons to local jewelry makers setting up shop on Sundays.
On the wine itself, Domaine Pouillon leans into natural winemaking, meaning native yeast, minimal sulfur, and hand-harvested grapes processed in small batches. Their whites are bright with real character and no residual sugar, and their reds land dry, earthy, and a little mysterious, which tracks with the old-world influence Alexis brought back from France.
Their newest sparkling release, a Pét-Nat of Pinot Noir, has become a popular pour on warm afternoons at the Bistro. If you’re headed there for a full sit-down experience, go on the earlier side of their open hours so you can grab a table with a river view before the place fills up.
