The Green Mountain State is home to more than 45 cheesemakers, and a design-your-own tour of the Vermont Cheese Trail is an excellent way to visit these traditional dairy farms—the majority of which are members of the VCT. You’ll find cheeses made from sheep, goats, and different cow breeds. And these cheesemakers create anything from cheddars and blues to hard-aged and creamy varieties.
This organization was founded more than 20 years ago to support and nurture the area’s farmers. Cheesemaking is an ancient art that many feel should be preserved, and there’s an importance placed on proper education for the best products. The Vermont Cheese Trail is a way to help promote and foster a community for these cheesemakers and the best way for visitors to indulge in this fantastic handmade Fromage.

Hit the Vermont Cheese Trail for Tastings
The state of Vermont is ranked in the top ten for most yearly cheese production in the United States. So it’s only fitting that your vacation here should include a trip along the Vermont Cheese Trail. There’s something special about the cheese produced on these charming farms, and you really have to taste it to understand.
Here are the four best cheeemaking stops on the Vermont Cheese Trail near our Warren B&B:
- Three Shepherds Farm: What’s better than cheese tasting? Taking part in a cheesemaking class! This family-owned farm and school give students hands-on lessons on the art of crafting delicious cheeses. They offer various class options, from quick one-day lessons to advanced and intensive programs.
- Von Trapp Farmstead: You’ll find distinct organic cheese at this stop along the Vermont Cheese Trail. They specialize in washed-rind cow’s milk cheese, a buttery Mad River Blue, a cave-aged alpine, and the Mt. Alice, a creamy, brie-like Fromage.
- Cabot Annex Store: Perhaps one of the biggest names in Vermont Cheeses, Cabot Creamery has been operating for more than 100 years. As a farm cooperative, 800 local dairy farmers contribute to the offerings. While the main creamery is about an hour from our B&B, you can get the same delicious cheeses at the Annex Farm Store nearly half the time.
- Midnight Goat Farm: Located in Huntington, Vermont, about 30 minutes from our Inn, this tiny goat dairy and creamery is a lovely stop along the Vermont Cheese Trail. They produce micro-batch handcrafted, artisan raw cheeses.
- Plus of course a stop at the Mad River Taste Place where you can sample a wide variety of Vermont artisan cheeses, and many others types of local products.

One of the best things about staying at our Warren Inn is our home-cooked breakfast with local ingredients and some of the best cheese in Vermont. Join us each morning of your stay at our communal dining table. Breakfast is served at 8:30 am, with hot coffee ready by 7 am. (During the ski season, breakfast is at 8:00 am). On winter weekends, we offer a light breakfast at 7:15 for skiers looking to hit the slopes early.
