Unique Things to do in Kansas City during your Missouri Getaway
Kansas City offers so much for visitors to do and see. From professional sports to live jazz, art museums to historical sites, there is something for everyone. Here are some of the more unique attractions to enjoy during your Missouri getaway:
- Explore the underground network of tunnels and caves in SubTropolis, the world’s largest underground business park. Up to 160 feet below the surface, dug into the Bethany Falls mine is a 55,000,000 square foot business complex with over 8 miles of paved roads, 500 truck docks, and over 2000 people working for over 55 companies including the United States Postal Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. Visitors can drive through SubTropolis during business hours.
- Play paintball or laser tag underground at Jaegar’s in SubTropolis! The first and only underground paintball in the world, experience for yourself the perfect climate for physical activity.
- Visit The Arabia Steamboat Museum. In 1856, the Steamboat Arabia sank near Kansas City and was lost for over 132 years. The recovery operation in 1988 was a modern day treasure hunt. Artifacts have been preserved and displayed in the museum in the historic City Market.
- At the corner of Vine and East 21st Streets, is a castle built in 1897. The Romanesque Revival Architecture was once the “best building in Kansas City” and housed the city workhouse and prison. Ownership changed hands over the years and the building has been abandoned since 1972. Now graffiti decorates the walls of the once trendy building designed to convey imposing authority.
- The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is one of the finest art museums in the world. The extensive collection of art is from nearly every continent and culture. A quartet of giant Shuttlecocks adorn the sculpture park outside the museum.
