The Best Places to View Fall Foliage in Wausau

Like in much of the Midwest, the fall color show in Wausau is nothing short of spectacular. What makes Wausau such a special place to see the foliage, though, are the smaller crowds and the town itself. Wausau is Wisconsin’s hidden gem, offering breathtaking views atop towering bluffs, peaceful overlooks along rushing rivers, and amenities rivaled by larger and more popular tourist destinations. The peak foliage season typically stretches from mid-September through early to mid-October. • Rib Mountain State Park, home to the popular Granite Peak Ski Area during the winter, is also an incredible place to see fall foliage at its peak. The third-highest point in Wisconsin, Rib Mountain boasts a superior view of the Wausau region’s changing fall colors.There are plenty of hiking trails, and the views of the top of the Observation Tower simply can’t be beat. • The Dells of Eau Claire County Park are scenic any time of year, but they are just plain magical during peak fall foliage season. Multiple bridges cross the river, offering incredible scenic overlooks.
• Another popular place in the Wausau area for both the fall foliage and the birding opportunities is Bluegill Bay Park.
• Wander under the incredible tree canopy and revel in the fall colors reflecting off the water at Big Eau Pleine County Park. You won’t be disappointed.
• Take a scenic drive, and take in the fall colors from the comfort of your car. One of the best drives in the area is along Highway 107, between Merrill and Tomahawk. The trip is approximately 30 miles long and meanders alongside the Wisconsin River, allowing for breathtaking views as you go.
• Even if you want to stick close to downtown Wausau, there are several places from which to enjoy peak fall foliage season. The River Walk, which is a paved path along the Wisconsin River, follows the whitewater course to Oak Island Park. Cross the bridge, and you’ll find yourself on the heavily wooded shoreline of Fern Island Park, which has an excellent trail system worth exploring.
