One of our favorite things to do near the inn is hike through the Madame Sherri Forest. The 513-acre forest is just across the New Hampshire border, in Chesterfield. The forest offers something for everyone- dog walkers, bird watchers, hikers, and snowshoers. Many come to see the “castle” ruins.

Antionette Bramare moved from Paris, France, to New York City around 1911. Married to an American on the run, the eccentric couple changed their name to Sherri. Madame Sherri was an accomplished costume designer in New York City, famously working for the Ziegfeld Follies.

Following her husband’s death in 1929, she purchased 600 acres in Chesterfield to build a French-inspired summer home. Madame Sherri was the talk of the town with her elegant furs, chauffeured Packard, and crowds of partygoers at the castle. She became infamous for her scandalous parties during Prohibition.

When Madame Sherri’s fortune declined, she abandoned the property. It was vandalized and ultimately burned down in 1962. Anne Stokes, a Vermont artist, bought the property with the promise that she would care for the land. The day after the sale went through, Madame Sherri passed away. Eventually, the land was donated to the Forest Society.

The trailhead is a well-marked path maintained by the Forest Society. There is a small parking lot on Gulf Road. An informational kiosk provides more information about the site and the history. The walk to the castle ruins is just a hundred feet from the parking lot. Several trail options exist to hike through Madame Sherri’s Forest from Gulf Road.

Today, all that remains of the castle are the foundations and the dramatic stone staircase that led to Madame Sherri’s private chambers. The castle ruins are a short walk from the parking lot across the footbridge. Gorgeous sugar maples surround the medieval-looking ruins. Photographers and artists will be inspired. Nature lovers will be in awe. Those seeking a supernatural encounter may even hear music or laughter as you hike through the Madame Sherri Forest. After your visit, return to our inn for a glass of wine to enjoy by the fire in the living room. Book your room now.

Hike through the Madame Sherri Forest and beyond

There are three trail options to hike through Madame Sherri Forest.

  1. Anne Stokes Loop is a popular two-mile moderate hike. Follow the well-marked trail over the footbridge, you will come upon the castle ruins. The next spot of interest is scenic Indian Pond, where you may spy a beaver or two. Continue up the hill for a spectacular view of the mountains and valley. The loop continues through a hemlock forest before returning to the parking lot. This hike is especially breathtaking during the fall when the foliage is at its peak.
  2. The shy four-mile out-and-back Wantastiquet hike offers stunning panoramic views of the Connecticut River, Mt. Monadnock, and on a clear day, even the Berkshires. The ascent is about one mile from the Anne Stokes Loop junction, after you hike through the Madame Sherri Forest. The hike is rated moderate, will take between 2 and 2.5 hours, and has an elevation gain of just over 1000 feet.
  3.  The Wantastiquest-Monadnock Trail (WMT) is 50-mile strenuous hike from Brattleboro to Mt. Monadnock. For those outdoor enthusiasts, might we suggest the reverse? There is an overnight shelter near Pisgah Park, with three tent sites soon to be completed. After your outdoor adventure, treat yourself to some relaxation in our inn.

Whatever your level of fitness, there is an outdoor hike for everyone in Brattleboro. We think you will love one of these hikes through the Madame Sherri Forest.
